66th Newsletter: Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde has announced plans to separate the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism in order to optimize the functioning of all ministries.

- Ambassador Oyedeji CEO RBFD blogger

In a recent newsletter that was released on Thursday night, Governor Makinde stated that the decoupling of the ministries will allow for better oversight and value extraction from the Tourism Board. He believes that the benefits of this adjustment outweigh the costs and will ultimately benefit the state.

“We will be decoupling the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism. So, we will have the Ministry of Information headed by one commissioner, while another will head the Ministry of Culture and Tourism,” Governor Makinde said.

The decision to separate the ministries will result in an increase in the number of commissioners from seventeen to eighteen under the Omituntun 2.0 administration. While some may argue that reducing the number of ministries would be more cost-effective, Governor Makinde believes that the adjustments will lead to improved governance and economic growth for Oyo State.

“The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism will be better able to oversee the Tourism Board and extract the value trapped in that agency, while the Commissioner for Information will focus on communicating the activities of government to the people through the various channels we have made available,” Governor Makinde explained.

Governor Makinde also mentioned that the next few weeks will be exciting for governance in Oyo State, as commissioners, executive advisers, assistants, and special advisers are expected to be sworn in and appointed. He urged the people to continue praying for the state and the country during these challenging times, expressing his belief that with a Nigerian can-do spirit and trust in God, they will overcome.

“Trusted worldwide by students, teachers, governments and industry experts, this year’s league table reveals how the global higher education landscape is shifting,” it stated.

“The University of Oxford tops the ranking for the seventh consecutive year. Harvard University remains in second place, but the University of Cambridge jumps from joint fifth last year to joint third.

“The highest new entry is Italy’s Humanitas University, ranked in the 201-250 bracket. The US is the most-represented country overall, with 177 institutions, and also the most represented in the top 200 (58).

“Mainland China now has the fourth-highest number of institutions in the top 200 (11, compared with 10 last year), having overtaken Australia, which has dropped to fifth (joint with the Netherlands).

“Five countries enter the ranking for the first time – all of them in Africa (Zambia, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Mauritius).

“Harvard tops the teaching pillar, while Oxford leads the research pillar. Atop the international pillar is the Macau University of Science and Technology.

“Overall, 1,799 universities are ranked. A further 526 universities are listed with “reporter” status, meaning that they provided data but did not meet our eligibility criteria to receive a rank, and agreed to be displayed as a reporter in the final table,” the added.

We’ll double our pace at developing Oyo – Makinde Appreciates Muslim Ummah for support

Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has revealed that his administration will double its pace on the path to attaining sustainable development in the state.

Governor Makinde made this known on Wednesday, while playing host to Muslim leaders in the Government and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, who visited him in his house on the occasion of 2023 Ileya festival.

The governor, who appreciated the Muslim community in Oyo State for standing by his administration during Omituntun 1.0, promised to roll out the names of some new appointees very soon.
He said, “First, I want to thank the Almighty for keeping all of us up until this moment; for us to witness another Sallah.

“About three months ago, we were all still out there campaigning and some people tried to sow the seed of division by introducing religion into the politics in Oyo State. But thankfully, they failed as our people did not listen to them, and we have a united Oyo State.

“We are all here celebrating another Sallah. So, I use this opportunity to greet my brothers and sisters of the Islamic faith for standing by this administration and also to wish them many more Sallah.”

While appreciating members of his cabinet for their contributions to the success of his administration during the first term, the governor implored everyone to play their part to make Oyo State better and more united.

He said further: “Our people are expectant and they want us to move as fast as possible and we have started. The House of Assembly, yesterday (on Tuesday), cleared some of our commissioner-nominees.

“The structure of government will start taking shape in days. So, our people should not despair or think we are moving slowly this time around. No, we are not. We will even double our pace.”

Earlier, the PDP Deputy National Chairman (South), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, thanked the governor for empowering the people of the state and executing laudable projects.

He also lauded him for exemplifying the virtue of Prophet Ibrahim who kept his vow to Almighty Allah.

Ambassador Arapaja said Governor Makinde kept his promise to the people of Oyo State in his first term. He expressed confidence that he would not deviate from that style in Omituntun 2.0.

The delegation included the Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi; Member representing Ibadan South East and South West Federal Constituencies, Rt.Hon Abbas Adigun Agboworin; Director General, Seyi Makinde Campaign Organisation, Chief Bayo Lawal; PDP State Secretary, Alhaji Wasiu Adeleke; PDP State PRO, Engr Akeem Olatunji; and PDP State Women Leader, Alhaja Wulemat Ibitoye, among others.

Oyo state PDP chieftain, Mogaji Olasunkanmi Joseph Tegbe has urged the good people of Oyo state irrespective of their religion to pray for the peace and development of Oyo state and Nigeria.

The Arafat message made available to the populist news by Mogaji Olasunkanmi Joseph Tegbe reads:

Today is the Arafat day, when pilgrims to the holy land climb Mount Arafat. This day is a significant part of hajj activities symbolised by fasting, praying, and submission to the will of Almighty Allah.

As we mark the auspicious day with many Muslims across the world joining the pilgrims in fasting, I urge all faithfuls to use the occasion to pray for the peace and development of Oyo state and Nigeria.

In solidarity, I urge my fellow Christians to use this season to preach and espouse religious tolerance, fellowship and solidarity that promotes development. Let each of us take time to reflect and commit to living as better persons.

Hon. Dhikirulahi Adedeji Stanley Olajide, lawmaker representing Ibadan Northwest/Southwest federal constituency in the house of representatives, early Tuesday morning joined other Muslims from across the globe at Mount Arafat.

Odidi Omo, as the two-term lawmaker is known, had arrived Mina yesterday with his wife, Adenike Shakirat Olajide, ahead of commencement of important Hajj rites.

Mina, a valley in the South Eastern part of Makkah, will accommodate the pilgrims for a couple of nights in the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah.

It is nicknamed “City of Tents” because of the massive presence of over 100,000 air conditioned tents which will house Oyo pilgrims and their counterparts from about 160 countries.

With a capacity of accommodating up to 3 million people, Mina is regarded as the largest Tent City in the world.

From tent city of Mina, he is expected to ascend Mount Arafat, an important rite which precedes the celebration of the Muslim festival of Eid El Kabir.

In Islamic tradition, Hajj exercise is regarded as incomplete without the ascension of Mount Arafat

He is also expected to proceed from Mina to a nearby village called Musdalifa to perform the symbolic throwing of stones at the Devil between sunrise and sunset, in commemoration of Prophet Ibrahim’s stoning of Satan who tried to discourage him from sacrificing his son in fulfilment of his vow to Allah.

Makinde: A Governor Like No Other By Suleimon Olanrewaju

Makinde: A Governor Like No Other By Suleimon Olanrewaju

© Ambassador Oyedeji Olusegun Abayomi CEO RBFD blogger.

Governor Seyi Makinde enjoys a huge dose of goodwill from the people of Oyo State. He is genuinely loved by the citizens across all divides. He is adored by Muslims, celebrated by Christians and revered by traditional worshippers.

The Governor is the pride of the old and a source of inspiration for the youth. Men like to flock around him, women love to hear him speak, even children can’t seem to have enough of him.

The eggheads esteem him, just as the hoi polloi venerate him. From Ibadan to Ibarapa, Oyo to Oke Ogun and Ogbomoso, Makinde is the face the people want to behold, the name they want to utter and the man they want to follow. For the people of Oyo State, Makinde is the quintessential leader.

An example will suffice.

The governor, in the evening of Monday, May 29, 2023, the day he was inaugurated for his second term in office, was on his way to the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, venue of his inauguration dinner, when his convoy ran into a traffic gridlock close to the venue. Not wanting to keep his guests waiting, he decided to get down from his vehicle to walk the remaining distance. As he alighted from the vehicle, a horde of people swarmed round him, some to take pictures with the governor, others to congratulate him on his electoral victory, yet some others to share with him what they would want him do for them in Omituntun 2.0.

He did not allow his security aides to chase them away, rather he moved close to them. All the people were exhilarated and they couldn’t hide it. Many of them wouldn’t have believed they could have an opportunity for a one-on-one with His Excellency.

They all kept hailing him as they saw him to the entrance of the event venue.

Makinde doesn’t just work for the people, he also walks with them.

Why is the governor so much loved by the people? Is it a function of prompt payment of salaries and pensions? Or is it a consequence of the health facilities his administration has improved? Could it be due to the infrastructure he has emplaced or the education sector he has transformed or the economy he has expanded?

All these are good enough reasons to revere a leader, but for Seyi Makinde, it is more because of his fairness, creative approach to governance, empathy and humility.

Governor Makinde ensured during his first term in office that all parts of the state had a feel of his good governance. Development was spread evenly.

He reconstructed the 65km Moniya-Ijaiye-Iseyin road, awarded the construction of the 34.85km Oyo-Iseyin road and similarly awarded the 76.7km Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso road with a view to connecting all the major zones in the state. In the same vein, the Light-up Oyo project is a state-wide venture targeted at giving a modern look to all parts of the state.

Operatives of the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun) are in every nook and cranny of the state, ensuring the security of life and property. Although he is a native of Ibadan, the governor sees himself as belonging to every part of the state. Consequently, all he does is for the benefit of the whole state. So, the governor is as much at home in Saki, Atiba, Ogbomoso or Idere as he is in Ibadan. He is as loved in Ibadan as he is in other parts of the state.

Makinde’s creative approach to governance is hard to equal. Before he came to power, change of power among transport workers in the state was war-like. Determined to put a complete end to the abnormality, he came up with the Park Management System, which limited the influence and power of transport unions in the management of parks in the state. With that, the state took its proper position as the owner of the parks and appointed a committee to manage it on its behalf.

When the government felt it was time to change the leadership after four years, it was done without any bloodletting or terror unleashed on anyone. Although at the outset some people complained about the PMS, the governor has been justified with the adoption of the same system by a number of states across the country and the reduction in transport workers-related violence.

His empathy is second to none. It is common knowledge how he went against popular opinion among state governors when the leaders decided that states should be locked down to curtail the spread of Coronavirus disease in 2020. Governor Makinde said he would not subscribe to that because of the realization that the bulk of the citizens survived on daily earnings. His argument was that keeping the people indoors to curb the spread of COVID-19 would be more hazardous than letting them out. So, he devised a means of allowing the citizens to go out in search of their daily bread without unnecessarily exposing themselves to the virus. With time, the Federal Government adopted that style and relaxed the restriction order it had earlier emplaced.

For Governor Makinde, the interest of the people he leads is paramount and that determines the action he takes.

Recently, in response to some comments about his visits to President Bola Tinubu, the governor said, “We are in politics because we want to add value. Yes, people have been abusing me because of my frequent visits to the President, but who do they expect me to be visiting? Well, I have news for them; I will continue to visit the Presidency to ask for things that Oyo State people are entitled to.”

The governor also stated last Wednesday during the proclamation of the 10th Oyo State House of Assembly that his visit, alongside others, to the President facilitated the signing of the Electricity Bill into law, adding that if the bill had not been signed before the end of the ninth National Assembly, a golden opportunity would have been lost because the process would have to be started all over again by the new Assembly.

He also said his administration would take advantage of the opportunity offered by the new law to ensure round-the-clock electricity provision in the state.

But perhaps the governor’s greatest appeal is his humility. Humility is respecting the other person irrespective of his status, station or stature. It is being considerate about others’ feelings even when they have no power over you.

It is treating others as you would want to be treated were the roles to be reversed. Because of his humility, Makinde puts others first. Because he is meek, he does not see his position as something to vaunt but an avenue for service. Because of his lack of hubris, his focus is doing that which is right for the majority of the people. Because he is not self-serving, he has no qualms deploying the whole of the resources of the state for the benefit of the people. Because he does all these, the people are unrepentantly attached to him. So, in Oyo State, the citizens don’t just see Seyi Makinde as their governor, he is more than that; he is their guy, their pal and the man they can be down to earth with: a governor like no other.

General News: Politics is about trade-offs. - Governor Seyi makinde

General News: Politics is about trade-offs. - Governor Seyi makinde

You must have read about my recent activities on my social media accounts—especially my visits to Abuja - Governor Seyi makinde

- Ambassador Oyedeji Olusegun Abayomi CEO RBFD blogger

You must have read about my recent activities on my social media accounts—especially my visits to Abuja. Remember, I promised the good people of Oyo State a better experience under Omituntun 2.0. I am happy that one of my visits directly led to our pushing for and getting the Electricity Bill 2022, passed by the Ninth Assembly, signed into law. If we had not used the window open to us before the inauguration of the Tenth Assembly, that bill would have had to go back to the floor for deliberations.

Thankfully, with the Electricity Act 2023 firmly in place as signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we can now push for and have the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission Bill passed by the Oyo State Tenth Assembly in good time. This provides a framework for private sector participation in the energy sector as we enact more policies that will make Oyo State the preferred destination for private-sector investment.

Of course, I have also been busy consulting widely to ensure that I keep to my promise of having a cabinet in place within the next two months. I ask for your support and prayers as I make the necessary decisions to move our dear state forward. As I have previously stated, those who served Oyo State well under Omituntun 1.0 will get a chance to continue their good work.

Let me also use this opportunity to reiterate a point I made during the inauguration of the Tenth Oyo State Assembly. Many people still think that in 2023, opposition politics is about hostility and perpetual enmity. It is not. This is one lesson that young people who really want to go far in politics should learn quickly.

After years of contesting and losing elections, I realised that politics is a game of principles and deep interests. I also learnt that politics is about trade-offs. But again, trade-offs should be based on principles. You gain followership when people know what your principles are. In a country such as Nigeria, where political parties are not yet set on proven ideologies, it is these principles that will determine political trade-offs and alignments. For me, those principles are equity, fairness and justice. My support will go to anyone who subscribes to those principles. It really does not matter whose ox is gored.

We cannot advance in disunity. Trade-offs lead to progress. And so, this will continue to be our operating principle in Oyo State as we march towards sustainable development.

Talk to you again soon.
