Ambassador Olusegun Oyedeji, Oyo State’s foremost disability leader and sports administrator, has expressed great appreciation to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for providing free public transportation to thousands of people with disabilities in the state.

Toward the end of 2023, the Oyo State Government, as part of palliative measures to cushion the effects of naira and fuel scarcity on residents of Oyo State, implemented the Omituntun 2.0 bus that he had promised to Oyo residents under the “Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery” (SAfER) initiative. 

This initiative was designed to improve the city’s mobility and alleviate the challenges that come with subsidy removal.

Although the state government rolled out the fares and list of intercity and intracity routes of Omituntun buses, the governor has formally exempted people with disabilities from paying a kobo. With a government-issued identity card for persons with disabilities under the aegis of Oyo State Agency for People with Disabilities, no single ID-carrying disabled person will pay a fare to enter Omituntun buses in the state. 

The ID card is the condition attached to enjoy free public transportation.

Branded under the umbrella of “Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery”(SAFER), this initiative bolsters the city’s intracity mobility and introduces intercity connectivity, linking Ibadan to various zones.

Oyedeji expressed his profound gratitude and appreciation for the remarkable initiative taken by the Makinde administration in providing free public transportation to thousands of people with disabilities in Oyo State, adding that this commendable effort reflects the governor’s commitment to inclusivity and social welfare, and it has undoubtedly made a significant positive impact on the lives of many.

The ambassador expressed that the decision to extend this service to people with disabilities showcases a deep understanding of the challenges they face in accessing public transportation. By eliminating financial barriers, the governor has not only made daily commuting more accessible but also fostered a sense of dignity and independence among this often marginalized group.

All disability clusters, including the Deaf, the Blind, the physically challenged, people with albinism, and significant others, will use the Omituntun 2.0 buses free of charge statewide.

 

The provision of free public transportation is a testament to this administration's dedication to creating an inclusive and compassionate society. It goes beyond just policy implementation; it reflects a genuine concern for the well-being and empowerment of all citizens, regardless of their physical abilities.

As a resident of Oyo State and a native of the Ibadan South West Local Government Area of Ibadan, the Ambassador said he and his community were proud to witness such progressive and empathetic governance, adding that the current state leadership sets a remarkable example for others to follow.  “I believe that initiatives like these contribute significantly to the overall development and well-being of our beloved state.” He enthused.

On behalf of the Oyo State disability community, the disability leader and administrator thanked Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of the marginalized people of Oyo State. “Your actions resonate deeply, and they inspire hope for a more equitable and inclusive future.” He concluded.

Hon. Oyedeji Olusegun Abayomi spoke with the South West Oyo State disability community about the significance of the 2024 Southwest LG Election. At UMC Primary School, Molete, Ibadan, the Deaf leader and administrator delivered a compelling message to party members about the coming election and the role of people with disabilities in ensuring PDP victory and shared prosperity. 

From Ibadan South-West LG Areas 1 to 12 ward, the community leader emphasised the importance of collective effort and charged party members and people with disabilities to actively contribute towards the success of the PDP in the upcoming local government elections. He reminded the people of the reelection of Governor Seyi Makinde and urged them to do the same for the coming Southwest LG election across wards. 

He thanked them for joining him yesterday 24th of February 2024 to discuss a topic that is close to his heart and crucial for the democratic fabric of our society - the importance of ensuring that every voice is heard, regardless of ability. Hon. Oyedeji Olusegun Abayomi addressed the vital role that individuals with disabilities play in shaping our society’s future through the power of their vote.

“In our diverse and inclusive In society, it is imperative that we recognize and embrace the unique perspectives and contributions of every citizen. People with disabilities are an integral part of this mosaic, and their experiences, concerns, and aspirations deserve equal consideration in the political landscape.” He stated.

Hon. Oyedeji Olusegun Abayomi confessed he was looking forward to the elections of members of the PDP. According to him, “Our democracy thrives when all its participants actively engage in the electoral process. Voting is not just a right; it is a responsibility that empowers us to influence the policies and decisions that shape our communities and nation. However, I am aware that individuals with disabilities may face additional challenges when it comes to exercising this fundamental right.”

He discussed the importance of voting accessibility. “It is our duty as a society to ensure that voting is accessible to everyone. This means addressing physical barriers, providing accommodations, and fostering an inclusive environment at polling stations. I am committed to advocating for legislation and policies that enhance accessibility and eliminate obstacles, making it easier for individuals with disabilities to cast their votes with confidence.”

He called upon every citizen, regardless of ability, to exercise their right to vote. By doing so, they not only honour the principles upon which our democracy was founded but also ensure that the decisions made by our government are reflective of the diverse tapestry of our nation.

He urged people with disabilities to work together to break down barriers, promote inclusivity, and build a society where every voice matters. The power to shape our future lies in the hands of every one of us, and it is through their collective participation that we will create a more just, compassionate and inclusive society for all.

Deaf African Football Confederation Appoints New President The Deaf African Football Confederation - DAFC has announced the approved appointment of Mr Adjagbe Ibrahim from Gabon as one-year interim President of the DAFC in support of the Deaf International Football Association - DIFA. Prior to his interim appointment as DAFC President, Ibrahim was the Vice President of DAFC Central Africa and made valuable contributions in supporting the development of the DAFC.

 Deaf African Football Confederation Appoints New President 

The Deaf African Football Confederation - DAFC has announced the approved appointment of Mr Adjagbe Ibrahim from Gabon as one-year interim President of the DAFC in support of the Deaf International Football Association  - DIFA.

Prior to his interim appointment as DAFC President, Ibrahim was the Vice President of DAFC Central Africa and made valuable contributions in supporting the development of the DAFC. 

The outgoing president, Mr. Nde had been the DAFC President since 2015 until 2023 without any elections, in line with the DAFC statute which stipulates that the President is elected every four years. DIFA was therefore requested to appoint new DAFC executive committee and dissolve Mr. Nde along with other members of the executive committee.

The 2nd Elective General Assembly and elections of the DAFC, scheduled to take place in Abuja, Nigeria, on May 21-23, 2024, have been postponed to November 14-15, 2024 due to serious circumstances beyond the organisation's control, including financial constraints, organized in conjunction with the 2nd African Deaf Football Championship (African Deaflympics Qualifiers) to be held in Abuja, Nigeria from 16 to 30 November 2024.

PRESIDENT TINUBU APPOINTS PRESIDENTIAL AIDE ON DISABILITY MATTERS

In his determination to ensure that every segment of society is sufficiently catered to within the ambit of the Renewed Hope Agenda of his administration, President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mr. Mohammed Abba Isa to serve as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Disability Matters.

Mr. Mohammed Abba Isa is a distinguished champion of persons with disabilities with over a decade of experience in local and international advocacy on matters concerning persons with disabilities.

The new presidential aide is a graduate of Public Administration with honours from the University of Maiduguri where he would go on to earn a Masters in Public Administration at the same institution in 2017.

The President tasks the new appointee to proactively create avenues of opportunity for inclusion through the inculcation of PWD requirements and perspectives in the policies and programmes of all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of the Federal Government while working closely with sub-national authorities to build a national consensus on PWD-friendly policy and environmental conditions in collaboration with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD).

 Sports Minister Welcomes Deaf Eagles, Congratulates Team on Nigeria's First Appearance at World Deaf Football Championships

_Ministry to begin work on making deaf sports mandatory at National Sports Festivals and Youth Games_

The Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, today welcomed back Nigeria's Men's Deaf football team, also called the "Deaf Eagles", in Abuja, after their participation at the 4th edition of the World Deaf Football Championships that took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Minister hailed the team for their outing as they made Nigeria proud. Nigeria was a first time participant at the Championships, making its debut after three previous editions of the Games.

"I congratulate you all for representing Nigeria at the World Championships, as we made our first appearance since 2008 when this tournament started," the Minister said. "In three previous editions, Nigeria was not represented, but for the first time ever, the Nigerian flag was hoisted at the Games courtesy of your hard work. This deserves that we appreciate and commend you."

Senator Enoh added that sports remains the greatest tool for social inclusion, with its ability to engender diversity, equity and inclusion in the society. 

"There is no greater demonstration of the social inclusiveness of sports than having a deaf team travel to represent Nigeria," he noted. "It is in sports that you find that there is no discrimination whatsoever. By finishing 11th at the world championships, this team has placed Nigeria on the world map. As a country, on the behalf of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we celebrate your uncommon love and sacrifice for our nation."

To foster the development of deaf sports, the Minister stated that he will work with relevant administrators to ensure deaf sports gets an assured place in the National Sports Festival. He added that his administration will also open the door for the addition of deaf sports to the list of events at the National Youth Games.

The President of the Deaf Sports Federation, Alhaji Sulieman Saka Dagbo thanked the Minister for receiving the team, as it was the first time of being accorded such honour in spite of their past achievements at the continental and global level. 

"We did not expect that a Minister would show up to receive us honourably, that has never happened before," he said. "With this honour, we will ensure that we perform even better in subsequent competitions."

Dagbo made a special request for the minister to provide accommodation, and allowances for the team, which was expeditely approved by the Minister.

Coach of the team Kamaldeen Banjo noted that in spite of the team travelling with 13 players and two coaches, they gave their best shot in Kuala Lumpur. He thanked the Minister for the support provided while the team was away on international soil.

"We want to appreciate the Honourable Minister for giving us the opportunity to participate in this tournament, else Nigeria would not have made the position it got."

Nigeria ranked 11th out of 25 countries at the Games, after surpassing the group stages. The deaf Eagles exited the Championship gallantly after losing 2-0 to Ukraine in the Round of 16.

As Govt holds three-day retreat

Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has tasked critical stakeholders in his administration to be diligent, prudent and innovative so as to deliver on the administration’s mandate of engendering sustainable development in the state.

This was as the governor advocated effective synergy among all key players across different Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the government, noting that this remained the only way the government would be able to implement policies and programmes that will have a lasting positive impact on the people.

Governor Makinde stated this on Wednesday, at the Conference Centre of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, during his opening address at a three-day leadership retreat for political appointees, including members of the State Executive Council, Special Advisers, Executive Assistants and Chairmen of Agencies/Parastatals, among others.

While declaring the event open, the governor said: “I want to use these opening remarks to answer two questions; why are we having an Oyo State Government Executive Retreat? Is it to get away from our issues in town, since we are here at IITA, a diplomatic environment? What should we expect from this retreat? At the end of these two and a half days, what would you have gotten?

“Answering these questions will set the tone for this event and even guide the facilitators and speakers in making their presentations. Every project must start with a goal and then you mark out your objectives on the goal.

So, let me answer the first question, why are we having the Oyo State Government Executive Retreat. It is an opportunity for all of us here as decision-makers to rub minds together and develop strategies that will facilitate the success of Omituntun 2.0 agenda.

At this point I would say that nobody should be a stranger to the Oyo State Roadmap for Sustainable to Development, 2023-2027.

“For some of you that we have been working together, we kept talking about the vision, so I believe that a majority of us here would know what is in that roadmap. But I have not had the opportunity to share with everyone as a group the vision behind those strategic plans.

So, this retreat would afford me the opportunity to share the three keys behind Omituntun 2.0 with you all.
“To the second question, what do you expect from this retreat? For those of you who have seen the programme of the day, it promises to be an interesting session, my expectation is that you take note and apply things learnt from the retreat in your various ministries, departments and agencies.”

Governor Makinde, while speaking on the theme “Exploring the Implementation of the Oyo State Roadmap for Sustainable Development 2023 -2027,” equally urged the political appointees to develop strategies that will facilitate the quick delivery of the roadmap sustainable development agenda also known as Omituntun 2.0.

According to him, residents of the state “are expecting more dividends of democracy within the short time of our second term in office,” even as he promised to continue to deliver on policies, projects as well as activities that will have a long term effect on the people of the state.

The governor, who maintained that his administration is still operating the four pillars of economic expansion, security, education and health, explained that the government only added the components of tourism and solid minerals development to the drive to expand the economy of the state

The governor equally explained that the agenda of Omituntun 2.0 is to consolidate on the achievements recorded by the administration under Omituntun 1.0, stating that more efforts would be required to deliver on his electioneering promises to the people, who aligned with his commitment to upgrade Omituntun 1.0.He enjoined the appointees to always collaborate with relevant ministries and agencies and play their parts in ensuring the delivery of the promises.

Delivering his paper, the lead speaker, Mr Niyi Yusuf, who spoke on the main topic of the retreat, “Adaptive Leadership Strategies in an Uncertain Time,” said that successful leaders are those that navigate their time even in times of crisis.

The keynote speaker and CEO of the FirstBank Group, Dr Sola Adeduntan, who was represented by Mr Olusegun Alebiosu, advised the appointees to set up strategies and practices that can be used to overcome obstacles and accomplish meaningful changes in line with the mission and vision of the state.

He urged the appointees to be dedicated to service in order to help the development of the state.Speaking on the topic, “Personnel Management in Economic Landscape,” Dr Adeduntan commended the achievements and good innovations of the Governor Makinde administration, especially in the areas of information technology, with the recent introduction of smart cards for Omituntun buses. 

Earlier in her welcome address, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo, noted that the retreat is strategic, stating that its objective is to ensure that all appointees work together to achieve the mission and vision of the administration, while looking inward to a great and holistic adaptive system.
