Makinde calls for unity among Egbe Amofin O’Odua

Oyo State governor, Governor Seyi Makinde, has called on the Egbe Amofin O’Odua to come together as a family and get what is due for the Yoruba race.

Makinde stated this at the maiden edition of Egbe Amofin O’Odua 2023 National Conference with the theme, “The Legal Profession in Nigeria: A Rebirth,” held at Aare Afe Babalola Bar Centre, NTC road, Ibadan, on Thursday.

The governor, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Segun Ogunwuyi, said as lawyers, members need to come together in one accord so as to achieve a common goal.

He said: “When there is unity, we can achieve a lot, and as lawyers, you need to come together and forge a common alliance so that in the equation of Nigeria, you can get what is due for the Yoruba race, even in the legal profession. So my message is you need to come together and unite and forge ahead.”

Chairman on the occasion and governor of Ondo State, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Catherine Oludunni Odu, said the programmer is a gathering of great minds with a shared interest in the rebirth of the legal profession in Nigeria.

Akeredolu noted that the justice sector in Nigeria continues to be an inalienable part of one of the arms of government just like any other sector, saying justice administration in Nigeria is not without its challenges, but it still remains the path to achieving justice.

He added that Egbe Amofin O’odua must raise mentors who are ready to shape the character of the legal profession as they help establish the customs and norms of the professon.

“When it comes to the administration of justice, judges are not the only ones who have roles to play. Lawyers have greater roles to play in ensuring that justice is administered. Let us bear in mind that all judges were once lawyers, and they remain so, except such a person is disrobed.

“The society, as a result, ascribes honour to the legal practitioner and because everywhere one is found, there is always reference to justice. It is for this reason that the legal profession is essential in the administration and effective dispensation of justice.”

Meanwhile, Chairman Egbe Amofin O’Odua, Chief Isiaka Olagunju (SAN) said: “Today is an important day for us as a milestone in re-uniting our bond and strengthening the core aims of the establishment of the association by our founding fathers.

“It promotes an invaluable platform for fostering the development of lawyers and for addressing socio-economic, cultural, and legal issues affecting its members.

“When this administration came on board, we desired the reunification of lawyers of Yoruba extraction to claim our rightful place in the NBA, re-unite members, and empower the young members to attain greater heights in the legal profession, which is in tandem with the aims and objectives of this great body.”

In her remarks, the first Nigerian female lawyer and first Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Folake Solanke, charged the authorities of Egbe Amofin O’Odua to reach out to young lawyers in order to protect Yoruba interests.

Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has rallied the 32 members of the 10th session of the Oyo State House of Assembly to work with him to bring about sustainable development in the state.

He gave this call on Wednesday today, shortly after the inauguration of the Assembly, held at the House of Assembly Chambers, where the member representing Ibarapa East State Constituency and immediate past Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, was re-elected as Speaker. Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi was also re-elected as the Deputy Speaker.

Governor Makinde, who stated that he was confident that the legislative arm would cooperate with his administration in its resolve to continue to deliver good governance, congratulated the 15 re-elected members and 17 newly-elected members of the 10th Assembly.

Governor Makinde maintained that the turn-over rate in the 10th Assembly meant that the learning process of the lawmakers would be short, calling on the lawmakers to work with his administration in its bid to make Oyo State the first to provide 24/7 electricity to its residents.

He stated that one of the benefits yielded by his trips to Abuja was the signing of the Electricity Bill into Law by President Bola Tinubu.

He equally noted that he would expect the lawmakers’ cooperation as he seeks to continue to improve the education sector, build more infrastructure and make life more meaningful for residents, adding that the achievements under Omituntun 2.0 will surpass those of the last four years.

He said: “It is my honour, pursuant to Section 105 subsection 3 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) to issue the proclamation of the 10th Oyo State House of Assembly.

“I congratulate and welcome you the 32 members of the House of Assembly, the 15 re-elected members and the 17 freshers.

“In the 9th Assembly, we had only one lady and now, we have two. Also, for the first time, we have 15 members from the 9th Assembly being sworn in today. Before then, we used to have at most three. So, we are laying the foundation for continuity in governance in Oyo State, and the learning process will also be very short.

“Let me also congratulate Rt. Hon. Ogundoyin on his emergence as the Speaker and Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi as the Deputy Speaker.

“I remember the first time I addressed you, four years ago, as we inaugurated the 9th Assembly, I prayed then that we would work together and forge a new type of synergy.

“I, again, ask all the Honourable members that you work with us. Work with us as we continue to make education a priority. We have promised the people of Oyo State that we will continue to allocate 20 per cent of our budget to education and that we will take all actions necessary to return another 20 per cent of our out-of-school-children back to the classrooms. Of course, these budgets will be sent to this house to be passed into law. Our expectation is that when we present our budgets, they will be passed in good time.

“I ask that you work with us in continued infrastructural development. We have promised the good people of Oyo State that we will continue to extract all the value trapped in moribund assets in the state; that we will complete the 110-kilometre Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road and that we will create a modern take to the Dugbe Business District at Ilutuntun in Akinyele Local Government Area, among other promises.”

The Governor added: “We will come to you for support as we take decisions that will make these deliverables possible.

“Again, my expectation is that you will support us to benefit the people of the state. I ask you to work with us as we strive to be the first state in Nigeria to provide 24/7 electricity supply to our people.”

Throwing more light on the plan of his administration to embark on power generation and distribution, the Governor said, “we have already started the process by presenting the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission Bill before the 9th Assembly. When passed into law, we will allow partnership with the private sector on large scale energy provision.”

The Governor, who spoke of his administration’s plan to improve on the environment, called on the legislators to cooperate with the executive in its bid to sanitise the state to birth a world-class environment.

He said: “We are proposing a new agency, the Oyo State Mobilisation Agency for Socioeconomic Development (OMASED). Through this agency, we will harness our sensitisation and enforcement effort for an orderly Oyo State on waste management, market sanitisation and urban development. We expect that when we come to you, you will deliberate on this timeously so that this instrument will be used effectively timely.”

Earlier, the newly-elected Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Ogundoyin, commended the governor for blazing the trail of good governance in the state, promising to cooperate with all stakeholders to uplift the state and place the Assembly on a higher pedestal.

BREAKING: DEBO OGUNDOYIN RE-ELECTED OYO ASSEMBLY SPEAKER

Adebo Ogundoyin, has again been elected the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly.

Ogundoyin, the lawmaker representing Ibarapa East State Constituency was re-elected as the speaker the second term, on Wednesday, during the inaugural sitting of the 10th Oyo Assembly.

His re-election was followed by a nomination by Hon Dele Adeola, member representing Iseyin, Itesiwaju state constituency which was seconded by Hon Gabriel Babajide, member representing Ibadan North II State Constituency.

His nomination comes shortly after Governor Seyi Makinde proclaimed the Assembly for the commencement of legislative duties.

The 10th Oyo state House of Assembly is made up of two political parties namely the People’s Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The Assembly has a total of 32 members. The ruling PDP has 28 members while the APC has 4 members .

Oyo state governor, Engr Seyi Makinde said, he would roll out appointments immediately after inaugurating the Oyo State House of Assembly on Wednesday.

Speaking, before he boarded a private jet to Abuja ahead of tomorrow’s proclamation of the 10th National Assembly, at the post-inauguration special thanksgiving service organized by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Fathers of Faith on Monday at Oritamefa Baptist Church, Ibadan, said he was desirous of changing the face of governance in the state.

According to him, “From that point, we can move fast, make the appointments and get people to start working for Oyo State. I am sure we won’t disappoint God and you.”

On his re-election, Makinde said, “The election is a motivation to rededicate myself for the service of the state.”

The Governor, who appreciated the people of the state for electing him for another term of four years, promised not to let them down.

He thanked the Christian community in the state for organizing the Thanksgiving service, saying:

“The work you have given to me is not from 2023 to 2027 because we will put Oyo State on the path to sustainable development between 2023 and 2027. But the work you have given to me is targeting 2027 and beyond.

“So, I am going to do my best in carrying the people of Oyo State along. We already have the roadmap for sustainable development.”

Earlier in his sermon, Oyo State CAN chairman, Apostle (Dr) Joshua Akinyemiju, said the gathering was to appreciate God and worship him on account of the Governor’s electoral victory.

While speaking about the Governor, the Apostle said, “Engr Seyi Makinde is a political apostle and a covenant child of God who brought accountability and probity to the governance of Oyo State.”

“That Governor Makinde is an assiduous, tenacious, unflinching, and heterogeneous entity is not a subject of debate.”

“He has a gallant and indomitable spirit to succeed in any venture he sets his hand and mind upon while relying solely on the omnipotent God. This Governor is a reformed reformer who has moved Oyo State from poverty to prosperity within a short period.”

He enjoined the Christian community to continue to uphold the Governor in prayers.

With sadness in My hearts and others Disability community painful about our Barrister Danlami Bashiru died on Wednesday June 6th 2023, of Barr. Danlami Umaru Basharu, MON, he was the third Executive Director and founder of Anglo-Nigerian Welfare Association for the Blind, ANWAB – operators of the ANWAB Centre for the Blind in Yaba, Lagos. He died following surgery at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, Ikeja Nigeria.

Danlami, as he is fondly called, was the third and a multi-talented blind Nigerian who did all he could to ameliorate the suffering of blind persons, including students, through the transcription of textbooks into Braille, which enabled many more blind students to go to school and become gainfully employed.

He was last December decorated by the Nigerian government with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger, MON, and until recently was Chairman of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, UNCRPD.

Danlami Basharu attended Pacelli School for the Blind and Partially Sighted Children, Surulere, Lagos; King’s College, Lagos; University of Wales, Aberystwyth (B.A. (Ed./History, Hons.); Durham University Business School, (MBA); Trinity College, Cambridge University (B.A., Law, LL.M and MA); and Nigerian Law School from where he was called to the Bar in October 1987.

He was with Nigerian Television Authority as Senior Producer from 1984 to 1996 and also as a presenter with Radio Nigeria from 1989 to 1990 before he became the Executive Director of ANWAB which he co-founded with friends in the UK 1996.

Born on 18th June 1959, Danlami was married with children and has been buried this evening at Agege Cemetery in Lagos according to Islamic injunction.

Barrister Danlami Bashiru was amongst the most Peaceful members of the Disability Community.

May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace, (Amen)

YESTERDAY SUBSIDY REMOVAL: MAKINDE ANNOUNCES PALLIATIVES FOR OYO RESIDENTS

Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on Friday, announced palliatives to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal on the citizens as he flagged off the dualisation of the 8.3km Akobo-Ojurin-Odogbo Barracks-Olorunda-Abaa junction Road.

The Governor, in his speech at the flag off, said: “We know that things are getting harder because the subsidy on PMS has been removed and this has made transportation cost increase further. Well, I have already set up a committee to look into what we can do about increasing civil servants’ salaries but I know that everyone in Oyo State is not a civil servant. So, we have decided to deploy more Omituntun buses to ease the transportation worries. I have also directed that there should be no increase in the fare paid on these buses.
